Lancel : Paris, 1876, la Belle Epoque: While Paris was thrilling to the plays showing in the theatres on the city’s Grands Boulevards and high society was living it up, Angèle Lancel, a woman of bold vision, not only opened a boutique in the Passage des Petites Ecuries, a fashionable arcade, she also began laying the foundation for a House that would still be dear to French hearts 140 years later. Initially establishing a boutique carrying articles for smokers, the curious, passionate Angèle Lancel quickly began to transform her shop into what today we would call a concept store where her prosperous, cosmopolitan clientele could find cigarette holders, jewelry, gold, gifts and her first bags. She soon opened a second boutique in Paris and then more locations in other sought-after destinations in France, including Nice, Bordeaux and Nantes. In 1901 Angèle was succeeded by her son Albert, a man with a love of the modern who had inherited his mother’s audacity and talent for innovation. The automatic lighter; the Bambino, the original portable radio; and the Aviona trunk were now available to the first world travelers—inventions that marked their own era and eras to come. In 1929, Lancel found its now legendary home on the Place de l’Opera. The House attracted luminaries such as Josephine Baker, Jean Renoir and Edith Piaf to this flagship store, a revolutionary concept and an address well-known to every Parisian. By the 50s the brand’s aficionados had spread beyond Paris, with Lancel boasting more than ten stores throughout France’s largest cities. Reinventing travel with the creation of a suitcase made from nylon, the Kangourou, the House once again showed its capacity to predict the way society was evolving. At the end of the 70s brothers Edgar and Jean Zorbibe gave Lancel a newly international dimension. In the 80s and 90s the House saw spectacular success with items like Palmyre, the red travel bags made famous by the legendary campaign visuals and the bucket bag ELSA, emblematic of the first generation of career women. In 1997, Lancel joined the Richemont Group (Cartier, Van Cleef and Arpels, Chloe, Alaia and others) and in 2005 opened a new flagship on the Champs Elysées. As always, the House’s creations are there for men and women who want to enjoy themselves while perusing luxury. Today, with its solid heritage and strong DNA, Lancel is expressing its savoir-faire and innovative creativity with new and truly unique designs such as CHARLIE, which has since become iconic, ENVELOPPE, Neo Elsa and more.
